Choose the kind of help you need.
BC Quote covers 18 home-service categories across Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Choose a service for project-specific information and a matching form.
Use the service pages to narrow scope before you request a match.
A service category is most useful when it describes the work a contractor would actually quote. A roof leak belongs under roofing even if the visible symptom is an interior stain. A cold room may start with HVAC, insulation or air-sealing research depending on what is already known. Water entering a basement can involve plumbing, drainage or restoration. If the cause is uncertain, use the homeowner guides first and then choose the service that best matches the work you want assessed.
Repairs and urgent problems
Roof leaks, plumbing leaks, electrical concerns, failed heating or cooling and water damage often begin with diagnosis. Give the contractor the symptom, location, timing and any steps already taken. Avoid turning an uncertain cause into a fixed scope before someone has assessed it.
Replacement projects
Roofing, windows, siding, flooring, gutters and major equipment replacements are easier to compare when size, existing material, access and desired outcome are known. Each service page identifies the information that changes the quote most.
Renovations and multi-trade work
Kitchens, bathrooms and general renovations often involve several trades and a sequence of decisions. Start with the renovation page when the project is coordinated as one job; use the individual trade pages when you are hiring a specialist for a defined portion.
Exterior and property work
Landscaping, decks, fences, concrete and paving depend heavily on access, drainage, dimensions and site conditions. Photos help, but approximate measurements and a description of slopes, gates or disposal constraints make a request more useful.
BC Quote keeps these categories separate so a homeowner can move from research to a more specific request without creating dozens of overlapping service labels. If two categories seem plausible, choose the one closest to the work you want priced and describe the uncertainty in the project details.
What a useful service request contains
Regardless of category, the most useful request tells a contractor what the homeowner can observe, what outcome is wanted and what constraints affect the work. Include approximate dimensions or quantities where practical, the property type, urgency, access limitations and photos that show the area safely. If the cause of a problem is uncertain, describe the symptom instead of selecting a diagnosis just to make the form feel complete.
For planned projects, separate must-have scope from optional upgrades. For repairs, mention what has already been tried and whether the issue is getting worse. For multi-trade renovations, say whether you want one coordinated project or are looking for a specialist for one portion. Those details make the category selection more meaningful and reduce the chance that two quotes are based on different assumptions.
Choose the service by the work that must be done
Home projects often cross categories. A leaking roof may also involve insulation or drywall; a bathroom renovation can involve plumbing, electrical, ventilation and tile; a landscaping project can turn into drainage or retaining-wall work. Choose the category that best describes the primary contractor you need, then list the related work in the project description so the scope is not artificially narrowed.
- Describe the primary problem or finished result you want.
- List any secondary trades already known to be involved.
- Include property type, city, timing and access constraints.
- Attach photos where they clarify condition or access.
Quote comparison checkpoint for this renovation project
Ask contractors to break out demolition, framing, building systems, permits, cabinetry or millwork, finishes, allowances, cleanup and change-order rules. The goal is not to force identical business models; it is to make exclusions and assumptions visible before a contract is signed.
- Give every bidder the same drawings, finish schedule and appliance list.
- Identify allowances separately from fixed-price labour and materials.
- Ask how unknown conditions and owner-requested changes will be documented and priced.
