Cracked or settled surfaces may reflect poor base, water movement, roots or soil conditions rather than only an old finish. Describe where settlement occurs and where runoff goes. For driveways and patios, include slope, access for excavation equipment and whether the new work must meet an existing garage, sidewalk or drain elevation.
Define thickness, reinforcement and edge details
A quote should explain excavation depth, base material and compaction, concrete thickness or paver build-up, reinforcement where proposed, joints, edge restraint and finish. Decorative finishes can add labour but do not replace sound base work. Ask how transitions at steps, walls, drains and property edges will be handled.
Curing and site restoration matter after placement
Concrete needs a plan for weather, curing and keeping traffic off the new surface. Paver projects need joint material and compaction after laying. Compare disposal, forming, saw cuts, sealing if included, cleanup and restoration of lawn or planting areas disturbed by equipment. If drainage is changing, make sure the final slopes are part of the written scope.
Show the contractor where elevations must meet
Photograph the garage slab, sidewalk, stairs, drains, gates and property edges around the planned work. Mark places where water currently ponds or flows. A driveway or patio cannot be priced well from area alone when the finished elevation must tie into several fixed points. Those reference elevations influence excavation, base depth, formwork and drainage decisions long before the decorative finish is chosen.
