Plan gutters as a drainage system, not a trim item
Trace where roof water goes after the downspout
Overflowing gutters can come from debris, poor slope, undersized outlets, roof geometry or nowhere for the downspout to discharge. Describe where overflow occurs, which roof areas feed the run and what happens at ground level during heavy rain. Photos taken safely after a storm can be more useful than a dry-weather close-up.
Include fascia, outlets and drainage connections
Replacement scope may involve more than new troughs. Ask whether fascia or backing is damaged, whether outlet locations should change, how downspouts will be secured and where water will discharge. Gutter guards can reduce some debris but do not correct poor slope, undersized drainage or damaged fascia, so they should be evaluated as one component of the system.
Compare size, material and cleanup details
Check gutter profile and size, downspout dimensions, number of outlets, corners, hangers, leaf protection if included and disposal of old material. For repairs, ask whether the contractor is sealing a local joint, correcting slope or replacing a full run. The written scope should also say whether underground drainage or foundation-side drainage is outside the gutter contractor’s work.
Use storm observations instead of guessing
For drainage problems, a short description of what happens during a heavy rainfall is often more valuable than the age of the gutters. Note which corners overflow, whether water jumps over the front edge, whether a downspout backs up and where the discharge ends. If safe, take ground-level photos while the system is carrying water. That evidence helps distinguish maintenance, outlet problems and downstream drainage issues before someone recommends replacing the entire gutter system.

Make the plumbing scope measurable before comparing quotes
Plumbing prices become more useful when the homeowner separates the visible symptom from the likely work area. Record which fixtures are affected, whether the problem is constant or intermittent, whether a shutoff works, and where water or drainage symptoms first appear. If the project involves replacement rather than repair, note fixture model, rough opening, pipe access and whether walls, cabinets or tile must be opened.
For larger work, ask for the quote to separate plumbing labour and materials from demolition, drywall or tile restoration, fixture supply, disposal and any permit or inspection responsibility. That prevents two proposals from looking far apart simply because one contractor included the restoration work and another did not.
- Photograph shutoffs, exposed piping and the affected fixture or drain.
- List every fixture on the same branch when a blockage or pressure issue affects more than one location.
- For repiping or relocation work, identify finished walls and ceilings that may need opening and repair.
- Confirm whether owner-supplied fixtures change warranty or installation responsibility.
