Start with grade and water movement
Before choosing pavers, turf or planting, note where water flows after rain and whether the project changes existing grades. Patios, retaining features and new planting beds can redirect runoff if base preparation and drainage are not planned together. Photos showing the whole yard and property edges are useful for understanding slope and access.
Separate hardscape, planting and irrigation scope
A landscaping quote may combine excavation, base material, retaining work, paving, soil, planting, irrigation, lighting and cleanup. Ask for these components separately when the project is large. Mature trees, narrow side yards, stairs and limited machine access can make material handling a major part of the cost.
Compare long-term maintenance as well as installation
Plant selection, drainage details, edging, joint material and irrigation all affect upkeep after the crew leaves. For low-maintenance goals, say how much pruning, watering and seasonal cleanup you are willing to do. The lowest installation price may not be the lowest-maintenance design, especially where drainage or weed control is left unresolved.
Mark what must stay before excavation starts
Identify trees, fences, irrigation, drains, sheds, patios and planting areas that must be protected. If machinery access is limited, measure gates and side yards before assuming a mini excavator or bulk delivery can reach the work. Also mark underground services where information is available. Contractors can then plan excavation and material movement around the retained features instead of discovering on the first day that the preferred access route cannot be used.

Landscaping estimates are more reliable when dimensions, grades and access are known. Measure the approximate work area, photograph slopes and drainage paths, identify gates or narrow access points, and note whether excavation material must leave the site. For patios, walls and drainage work, existing elevations and where water can safely discharge matter more than decorative selections at the beginning.
Ask for excavation, base preparation, soil, planting, hardscape, drainage, disposal and restoration to be separated in the quote. Heavy-equipment access can materially change labour, so state the narrowest gate or path and whether the contractor can stage materials on the property.
