Identify the wall problem before choosing cladding
Faded siding, loose panels, staining and interior moisture do not necessarily have the same cause. Note where damage appears, whether it follows a window, roof edge or deck connection, and whether previous repairs have been made. A cladding replacement quote should distinguish a finish upgrade from work needed to correct water entry or damaged sheathing.
Ask how water is managed behind the exterior finish
Exterior work should address transitions at windows, doors, decks, penetrations and roof-to-wall locations, not just the field of the siding. Ask what happens to existing building paper or membrane, flashings, trims and penetrations. If the wall is opened, the proposal should explain how deteriorated sheathing or framing would be documented and priced before being covered again.
Compare the complete wall assembly
Check cladding product, trim, fasteners, flashing, ventilation or rainscreen components where applicable, disposal, sealants and painting or finishing. Make sure each quote handles soffits, fascia and penetrations consistently. If one contractor is replacing only the visible siding while another is rebuilding the drainage layer behind it, the totals are not describing the same project.
Photograph transitions, not only damaged panels
Wide photos should show how the damaged wall meets windows, doors, decks, roof edges and the ground. Close-ups can then document cracks, staining, loose pieces or failed sealant. This matters because exterior leaks commonly appear at transitions rather than in the middle of an otherwise intact wall. A contractor can use those photos to decide whether a siding repair visit is appropriate or whether the project should include broader envelope investigation before materials are ordered.
