Cedar roofs need a different maintenance approach from asphalt or metal. In BC’s damp climate, keeping the roof able to drain and dry matters more than simply making it look new.

Western red cedar roofs are common on older and higher-end homes across parts of the Lower Mainland. Cedar is a natural material, and maintenance decisions should preserve its ability to dry rather than trap moisture inside the wood.

Keep debris from accumulating

The Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau recommends removing accumulations of needles, leaves, branches and dirt because cedar needs to breathe. Debris can hold moisture and slow drying.

Heavy moss should not be ignored

The Bureau notes that heavy moss can cause water to back up and that moss holds soil and moisture against the wood. Cleaning methods need to be appropriate for cedar, and homeowners should not walk on a roof themselves to inspect it.

Do not “seal” a cedar roof

For cedar specifically, the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau warns against sealing the roof in a way that locks moisture in. If a topical treatment is being considered, ask what the product is designed to do, whether it is appropriate for cedar roofing, and what evidence supports the claims.

Repair versus restoration versus replacement

Localized split, curled or damaged shakes may sometimes be repaired. A roof with widespread deterioration, repeated leaks, decayed decking or extensive past patching may be a poor candidate for cosmetic restoration. Ask the contractor to explain what condition remains after the proposed work and how long they reasonably expect the result to perform.

Questions to ask before paying for cedar restoration

  • What exact cleaning method will be used?
  • Will damaged shakes be replaced, and how many are included?
  • Is any coating or preservative being applied? What is it?
  • Does the work address leaks and flashing problems, or only appearance?
  • What warranty applies to the restoration work?
  • Would replacement be more economical given the roof's overall condition?
