A high star rating is useful, but it should not be the only thing you check before hiring a roofing contractor in BC.
Check public reviews — and read the details
Look beyond the average star rating. Read recent reviews for patterns involving communication, cleanup, warranty follow-up, punctuality and how the company handled problems. A long review history can be more informative than a perfect rating built from only a handful of comments.
Ask for a written scope
A roofing proposal should make it reasonably clear what work is being priced: material, removal/disposal, underlayment, flashing, ventilation, decking assumptions, cleanup and warranty details. If something important is unclear, ask before signing.
Ask about insurance
For significant roofing work, ask the contractor what liability insurance it carries and request current proof when appropriate. Do not rely only on a logo or statement on a website.
Check WorkSafeBC status
WorkSafeBC specifically recommends that homeowners hiring an independent business check whether the business is registered and making required payments. Its public clearance-letter system lets you search a registered firm and confirm its status. WorkSafeBC warns that, in some circumstances, a customer could be responsible for unpaid premiums if a registered contractor is not in good standing.
Understand who is doing the work
Ask whether the company uses its own employees, subcontractors or both, who will supervise the project, and who your contact is if there is a problem after completion.
Compare warranties carefully
Separate the product/manufacturer warranty from any contractor workmanship warranty. Ask what each covers, how long it applies, whether there are exclusions and what documentation you receive after the job.
Do permits apply?
Permit requirements depend on the municipality and the scope of work. Simple roof-covering replacement may be treated differently from structural changes. When uncertain, confirm with the local building department rather than assuming.
